St. Peter's Anglican Cathedral
Tallahassee, FL
The first North American cathedral built in the past 50 years, St. Peter's sits perched near the crest of a grassy hillside clearing in NE Tallahassee, FL.
Historical precedent played a significant role in guiding the design vision for the clients of St. Peter’s Anglican Church. Great care was given to architectural proportion, including the design of the arches, the placement of towers, and the intricacy of detailing. Consistent with Anglican tradition, the church is oriented along a true east-west axis.
Many architectural elements carry symbolic meaning. For example, the building features twenty-four spires, representing the twenty-four elders of the church. The rose window includes thirteen segments—twelve petals symbolizing the apostles, encircling a central hub that represents Christ.
During the programming phase, several opportunities for shared space were identified. For instance, the Fellowship Hall was designed to be subdivided into classrooms, allowing it to serve both Sunday School and fellowship functions at different times. This flexible use of space supported the church’s evolving needs.
As part of the planning study, Dodstone developed a phased construction strategy to minimize disruption to ongoing church activities. A corresponding construction budget was created to support phased implementation. Throughout the project, we worked closely with an acoustical consultant and the church’s audio/visual team to ensure that modern technologies were seamlessly integrated into the church’s historically inspired design.
